The Raven struggles to fly for me

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Sometimes I read about an upcoming film production and I get giddy with anticipation to see the finished movie.  This is unfortunately not one of those times.  There’s been a flurry of press the past couple of days for a film currently in preproduction called ‘The Raven’.  I should be the target audience, so why am I suppressing the urge to throw up?

Here’s how the project is described: “‘The Raven’ is based on a Hannah Shakespeare/Ben Livingston script set in the last five days of Poe’s life, when a serial killer is running around Baltimore using Poe’s stories as the backdrops to his killings. Poe and a young detective have a ticking clock to outsmart the killer before he kills again.” (via Variety.)  The Hollywood Reporter adds that Poe joins forces with the detective when his fiance is kidnapped, presumably by the serial killer.

Obviously some liberties have been taken with the story.  While there is some mystery surrounding Poe’s death at the age of forty, as far as I and any Poe historians know, there was never a serial killer using Poe’s stories in connection with his crimes.  I’m also fairly certain that Poe didn’t have a fiance at this point in his life.  This film sounds like ‘Shakespeare in Love’ meets ‘Se7en’.  I like both of those films, but I just cannot get on board with this one. It especially irks me that certain entertainment websites are calling this a biopic.

Shooting is scheduled to begin late this fall in Serbia (yeah, because when I think nineteenth century Baltimore I think Serbia).  And if you haven’t heard, the actor signed on to play Poe is none other than John Cusack.

My first thought was how ludicrous!  But on closer examination I can see some resemblances in their features.  They both have dark hair, small eyes, large foreheads and sort of crooked noses.  It’s still hard to imagine a man I associate with charming romantic comedies embodying the disturbed nature of Poe’s final days.  And while I don’t know what Poe’s voice sounded like, I never imagine it to sound like John Cusack’s voice.

I may live to eat all these words.  This film could come out and be completely up my alley.  But for now I see it as another Hollywood train wreck.

Do you share my misgivings or does this sound like something you’ll go see?

True Blood at the Emmys and Season 3 Episode 11

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Anna Paquin Stephen Moyer Alexander SkarsgardSadly, True Blood didn’t win the Outstanding Drama Emmy last night.  On the bright side, Alexander Skarsgard joined newlyweds Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer onstage as presenters.  The trio looked gorgeous and relaxed.  Anna wore Alexander McQueen and I was reminded once again that she is the luckiest woman alive.

As they took the podium, Stephen joked that an archaic Emmy law required the trio to make a vampire pun while onstage.  Alexander jumped in, “Stephen, don’t. This is going to be quite painful. Allow me. It is now our bloody thrill —it’s worse than I thought—to present the award for Outstanding Directing in a Miniseries or Movie.” Referencing a moment earlier in the show when presenter Ricky Gervais ranted about the show’s dry policy and then had waiters serve beers to people in the front rows, Alexander added, “We just want to thank Ricky Gervais for the non-alcoholic beer. It was delicious.”

As we reach the last two episodes of season 3 I have to admit that this season has let me down a little.  It’s still my absolute favorite show on air, but I’m frustrated with all the disconnected story lines pulling everyone in different directions.

If I could pick one story to throw clean out this season it would be Jason’s.  In season 2, Jason fell into the trap of the seductive Church of the Sun.  This season, he’s all over the place.  Sometimes he’s trying to be a cop.  Sometimes he’s trying to put the new local football player in his place.  And other times he’s in love with a were-panther/meth dealer that he barely knows.  Crystal and her desperate need to escape from Pot Shot, but also save the citizens of Pot Shot from a drug raid (put into motion by Jason) is so annoying.  And what is a were-panther?  It’s a totally made-up thing as far as I can tell (unlike werewolves which have been recorded throughout history — you can’t hear my tone of voice so I feel the need to say this comment is a bit tongue in cheek.)  While I sympathize with Jason’s vulnerability at the new rising football star beating his old high school record, his self-righteous denigration of V is too hypocritical to get excited about.  I don’t like Crystal.  I don’t like Jason’s obsession with a high school student.  I miss the fun-loving, trouble-chasing Jason of season’s past.

The other stories, even the more minor ones, have a better hold on my attention.  Jessica and Hoyt are back together where they belong.  After coming down from their V high, Lafayette and Jesus are driven apart by Lafayette’s fears that Jesus has a demon inside of him.  Tara confronts Andy Bellefleur about Egg’s death and the subsequent cover-up and he tearfully apologizes.  His quiet performance is heartbreaking and one of the most truthful emotional moments of the episode if not the season.

The other emotional drama involves Arlene’s quest to rid her body of Rene’s spawn.  The spell she and Holly do to bring on a miscarriage almost works, but that evil creation is hanging in there.  Arlene’s fear for her family if she brings Rene’s baby into the world read natural and true, even if there is no evidence that serial killing is a genetic trait.

Meanwhile Sam’s nice guy persona cracks when he goes on a major bender and abuses everyone he comes across.  After being fired and told to get lost, Tommy sneaks back into Merlottes to steal from his big brother.  Little does he know what happened to the last people who tried that…

But the major story line, and the one I really care about, is the menage a trois pull between Sookie, Bill and Eric along with Eric’s quest to destroy Russell.  Sookie escapes Fangtasia’s basement only to be caught again by Eric and Russell and dragged back.  Eric convinces Bill that he has a plan that should give them both what they want.  Sookie will live and Russell will die.  But Sookie thinks Bill is betraying her again.  Why doesn’t it ever occur to her that they have a plan?  She should know by now that Bill would die for her.  Anyway, Eric and Russell drink from Sookie and go outside.  Russell believes Sookie’s blood will protect him from the sun.  And it does.  For a few moments.  It’s touching to see how much it means to the vampires to be out in the sun again.  Russell tells Pam she can’t even fathom what it means to be in daylight after thousands of years of night.  Unfortunately when Russell realizes his vulnerability he’s handcuffed to Eric who tells him to face death with courage.  They will die together.  That Russell will die I’m fairly certain.  Eric, not so much.  It’s hard to worry over this cliff hanger since he’s such a popular character.  Even so, I hate waiting two weeks to see how it plays out.  HBO is not going to air a new episode next weekend because of Labor Day.  Grumbles.

What did you think of this episode?  Which story lines do you want tied up in the finale and which story lines do you hope will carry over into season 4?

True Blood Season 3 Episode 10

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

We finally got some answers and some partial answers to the questions that have been at the center of this season.  But can anyone explain what some of Bon Temps’ humans were thinking this week?

The biggest reveal came in the first few seconds: Sookie is a fairy.  Okay, I’m not an expert on fairy mythology, but since when can fairies read minds?  Also, aren’t they supposed to be tiny with translucent wings?  Am I the only person who doesn’t think this makes sense.  Sookie pronounces it lame, but if I were her, I’d be peppering Bill with a lot more questions, such as, what other powers do I have and how do I control them?  Instead, her main concern is if the only reason Bill loves her is her delicious blood.

Lafayette saves Crystal’s father with the help of some V, but the ungrateful lout is furious that he has vampire blood inside of him.  He confronts his daughter and tells her it’s her duty to mate with the man he has chosen, but she vows never to return to PotShot.  Then she disappears until the end of the episode when it’s revealed that she can shift into a Panther.  I’m not sure what supernatural creature takes the form of a panther (werepanther?), but Jason is suitably impressed.

Meanwhile Sam’s dark past is revealed in flashbacks.  He’s committed grand larceny and double homicide.  That’s good to know.  But it raises some interesting questions about the rest of his shifty family.  Why are they making a pittance at dangerous dog fights when they could be stealing expensive jewelry?  Seems like shifters would never have to worry about money because they could steal with minimal risks to themselves.  Maybe Sam will help his little brother come to that conclusion…

Lafayette and Jesus go on a rollercoaster V trip together.  Jesus talks about the magical folk in his ancestry as well as Lafayette’s.  But the trip comes to a frightening halt when Jesus shows Lafayette his grandfather’s dealings with dark magic and Lafayette freaks out.  Lafayette has always avoided tainted magic.  At Sookie’s grandmother’s wake he threw out food people bought because of its bad hoodoo vibe.  But will his fear for Jesus’ grandfather be enough to keep them apart?  If Jesus can reconcile his feelings for Lafayette with Lafayette’s drug dealing, I hope Lafayette can ignore Jesus’ grandfather who is probably in Mexico and no threat to them (at least in the last two episodes of the season).

Hoyt pledges his love to Jessica and pitbull Tommy attacks him in the Merlotte’s parking lot.  Seeing her love in danger is the motivation Jessica needs to act.  She throws Tommy into the trees and heals Hoyt with her blood.  Now he’s going to be even more besotted with her and she’ll always feel when he’s in danger.  Are they truly back together though?

Tara is in love with her hero Jason again.  Until Jason tells Tara that he shot Eggs, and she runs off.  Now why in the world would he tell her that?  While Jason is distracted, Sookie gives him the slip and goes to Fangtasia to talk to Eric.  Are the Stackhouses taking stupid pills?  Eric uses the opportunity to look Sookie up in the basement until he figures out how he can use her to kill Russell.  And where is Russell?  All episode you’d think that Russell would be coming to kill Eric.  He’s faster and stronger so it should’ve been no problem to swoop into Fangtasia (good hiding place Eric) and rip his head off.  Instead he’s playing make-believe Talbot with a human prostitute.  I guess he can afford to be patient, but if I were after revenge I’d get to that first and play with prostitutes later.  There were so many logic problems like that where characters just weren’t acting smart that I finished the episode annoyed with everyone.

What did you think of this episode?  Are you satisfied that Sookie is a fairy?  What is Eric going to do with Sookie?

True Blood Season 3 Episode 9

RIP my beloved psychopath

Another week, another mindf*ck.  I spent most of this episode anxiously waiting for bad things to happen to my favorite characters.  Sookie, Lafayette and Eric made it through, but others weren’t so lucky.

I was right.  Franklin wasn’t dead before, but he sure is now.  And I’m mourning him — deeply.  He was the best new character of the season.  He lit up every scene he was in.  While I enjoyed first season’s sarcastic Tara, I would have sacrificed this season’s scared, self-pitying Tara to keep him.

Instead of Franklin we’re hanging onto Alcide (eye candy for sure, but a little wooden as a character) and Crystal.  I don’t know about you, but I’m hating the Crystal story line.  So far it doesn’t connect to anyone else’s story (aside from a brief intersection with Lafayette).  And obviously something supernatural is going on there, but I’m not interested in it.  How many supernaturals does Bon Temps need?  Shouldn’t the majority of citizens be ordinary humans?  If not, the super part of supernatural loses its meaning.  All the new characters seem to have a supernatural secret (maybe even Jesus with his mysterious past and jaguar tattoo) and it’s too much.

The story line I sank my teeth into this week was the Eric v. Russell scenario.  Russell showed a spark of humanity in his treatment of the goop that constitutes Talbot’s remains.  Carrying around Talbot’s blood in a glass urn and talking to it is seriously creepy and deliciously disturbing.  But the best part of the episode was his televised speech at the end when he announced to America that humans are food.

Oh, one more complaint, what is with the Authority’s goons invading Fangtasia dressed like Robocops?  That was beyond ridiculous.  I have to say, this episode was not a favorite.  I’m waiting to see how it fits into the overall arc of the season, but I found a lot to be annoyed with.

What did you think?  Are you glad Tara was spared?  Do you see merit in some of the plot lines or characters I don’t like?  I’d be interested to hear from fans of Crystal or Alcide…

True Blood Season 3 Episode 8

Monday, August 9th, 2010

This episode was a lot more about the aftermath of last week’s bloodbath than it was about furthering the story. It felt a bit slow to me, but that’s probably just because many of the questions I was itching to have answered never came up. Where is Franklin and what is he going to do to Tara? He can’t be dead. He’s my favorite new character. Is Pam okay?  What is Crystal and her brood of hillbillies? And for God’s sake what is Sookie?!

One thing is clear, Sookie has Hadley to thank for the mess of trouble she’s been in for the last few months. Hadley revealed Sookie’s powers to the Queen, the Queen sent Bill to Bon Temps, the drama commenced. But how does Hadley know what Sookie is if Sookie doesn’t even know? (sidenote, Hadley’s see-through lace robe/lingerie combo kicked ass).

I don’t blame Sookie for being scared of Bill after he almost killed her, but they belong together. I was relieved when they made up at the end of the episode.  There were some other touching moments this week such as: Sam comforting Tommy after he drove their mother away, Jesus reaching out to Lafayette, Bill teaching Jessica how to fight, and Alcide and Sookie admitting their mutual attraction.

But the real theme of the episode seemed to be revenge.  Debbie asks Russell for permission to rip Sookie’s head off as revenge for Cooter’s death and her relationship with Alcide (which Debbie thinks is much more carnal than it is).  Jason wants to kill Bill, but he gets distracted when Crystal turns up.  He threatens her father showing once again that his stupidity knows no bounds.  Eric plucks an eye for an eye by staking Russell’s lover Talbot.  Poor Talbot. We barely knew ye.  I wasn’t exactly sad to see him go, but I hope Eric knows what he’s doing.  How can he win in a showdown against Russell?

This episode was high on drama, but it lacked the comedy I enjoy from the show.  Without appearances from Franklin or Pam, and with Lafayette and Eric on serious business, there weren’t any charming moments to latch onto and lighten the load.  Hopefully next week there will be a change of tone and/or some answers.  Otherwise this viewer is going to go a little crazy!

Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark Trailer

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

The first teaser/trailer for Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark is out and it definitely leaves me wanting more.  I am so excited to see this movie.  I can’t believe it doesn’t come out until January 21, 2011.

True Blood Season 3 Episode 7

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

What a blood fest!  Last week I wished for the deaths of several characters, and in this week’s episode, some of my wishes came true.  Lorena finally got hers when she was staked by Sookie.  There was so much drama, I barely had time to celebrate before Cooter was shot down as well.  Two down, a handful more to go.  Even though I was chomping at the bit to see Lorena taken down, watching her shoot blood out of her mouth and collapse onto Bill in a shower of goo was hard to stomach.  Is it just me, or is this show getting gorier by the week?

Once some of the goons were dispatched of, Alcide and Tara managed to spirit Bill and Sookie out of Russell’s compound in the back of a van.  Bill seems done for, but Sookie persuades him to drink from her.  Unaware of what he’s doing (I hope) he practically drains all of her blood.  When Tara sees what he’s done, she tries to kill him by pushing him into the sun.  But Sookie’s blood seems to protect him from being fried.  Curious… But not as curious as the doctor’s announcement at the hospital that Sookie has no blood type.  No blood type?  Everyone has a blood type…

While this is going on Sam is infiltrating the dog fight that Joe Lee is forcing Tommy to participate in.  We see that dogs that lose are immediately shot and fear for Tommy’s safety.  Luckily, Sam persuades Tommy to leave with him.  Being an animal lover, this scene was fairly heartrending.  I agreed with Sam that Tommy’s parents are worse than Tara’s mother or any other parents.  How could people put their son at risk like that?  Sick sick sick…

While Sookie’s loved ones gather around her as she lays in a coma, we see her enter a magical realm of frolicking, beautiful people.  She’s carrying an empty glass that one of the mysterious strangers fills for her with liquid light which she pronounces delicious.  The stranger tells her she’s had it before and invites her to stay forever.  But Sookie won’t stay.  And she won’t get in the water because she’s afraid.  Sookie’s guide tells her she shouldn’t fear water, water didn’t kill her parents.  Interesting, did some supernatural creature get them?  Then Sookie is warned that Bill will steal her light.

Is Sookie an angel?

Back in the hospital Bill reappears and gives Sookie a transfusion with Tara’s glare upon him.  She hoped he’d died a fiery death, and I don’t really blame her, but I’m still glad to see him.  Sookie wakes up with a scream.

Meanwhile Eric now knows what Sookie is, thanks to torturing the Queen’s courtier and Sookie’s cousin Hadley.  Infuriatingly, Hadley whispers in Eric’s ear, so we still don’t have more than clues to go on.

Eric, the Queen and Russell all arrive at Fangtasia to confront the Magister and save Pam.  In the scuffle, Russell announces he’s staging a coup to become the authority amongst supernatural kind.  The Magister continues to pledge allegiance to the “true authority” until he realizes it will cost him his life.  Then he backtracks a bit.  His new tact isn’t enough to save him, however, as Russell decided to decapitate him with the silver end of his own cane.  (I didn’t know that they could be decapitated)  I know Russell’s a bad guy and I shouldn’t root for anything he does, but after the Magister’s ill-treatment of Pam, I was quite relieved to see Russell take him down as well.

I guess I have to wait another week to find out what happened to Franklin when he woke up with his head flattened and bloody.  What will Russell do when he finds out that Lorena and Cooter are dead?  Are we going to meet the vampire Authority that the Magister kept talking about?  Still so many questions.  I feel like a patient in the hospital getting rehydrated from an iv drip by slow drip.

In Case You Missed It: Entertainment News

Monday, July 26th, 2010

We have Comic Con to thank for the deluge of Hollywood announcements made in the last few days.

  • Guillermo del Toro is developing a film for Disney based on the ride the Haunted Mansion.  It’s not really a remake of the failed Eddie Murphy film, rather, according to del Toro, “We are making it into an e-ticket ride. We are going to make it scary and fun at the same time. But the scary will be scary. And to me, the mansion has to become the haunted house movie that a generation remembers and loves after being created by us. We are doing this by reintroducing… the mythology in the mansion will be done, and this is really for the hardcore fans, it is going to be created around the character we are reintroducing into the tale. And it is my biggest hope that we can reintroduce it right. And that is the Hatbox Ghost.”
  • Brad Pitt is going to star in the film adaptation of “World War Z.”  Marc Forster (Quantom of Solace) is attached to direct.
  • The film adaptation of Dark Shadows, which will be directed by Tim Burton and star Johnny Depp, finally has a screenwriter.  Seth Grahame-Smith, author of “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” and “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter,” will write the screenplay for the vampire soap opera.
  • AMC announced more of the cast of The Walking Dead. Joining previously confirmed Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes, Jon Bernthal as Shane Walsh, Sarah Wayne Callies as Lori, Laurie Holden as Andrea and Emma Bell as Amy are Michael Rooker (Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer) as redneck Merle Dixon and Norman Reedus (Blade II, Masters of Horror) as his brother Daryl.  The following actors play zombie survivors: Andrew Rothenberg (True Blood he played the nasty vampire Malcolm in the first season) as Jim; Juan Pareja (The Mist) as Morales; Jeryl Prescott Sales (The Skeleton Key, Vacancy 2) as Jacqui; Melissa McBride (The Mist) as Carol; Adam Minarovich (Exhibit A-7) as Ed; and IronE Singleton (The Blind Side) as T-Dog.

This next thing isn’t news, per se, but in case you missed the new Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides teaser trailer that was unveiled at Comic Con, you might want to take a look.  Captain Jack Sparrow explains that he is not looking for a crew to find the Fountain of Youth, doesn’t even have a map, it’s illuminating.

YouTube Preview Image

If Pirates 4 turned out to be 90 minutes of Captain Jack Sparrow sitting in a chair with a bottle of rum talking about all the things he wasn’t going to do, I’d still go see it and probably buy it on dvd.  In fact, Disney could save a lot of money by making that the film.  I’m excited about Guillermo del Toro’s announcement because I’m hoping The Haunted Mansion gets a feature as worthy of the ride as the Pirates of the Caribbean films are to that ride.  Guillermo is one of the few filmmakers I’d trust with that project.

I’m also excited about the Dark Shadows news because it involves my favorite director and actor combo, and I’ll be first in line for anything they do.  The Walking Dead has a lot of promise and could fill some of the void left by the end of True Blood Season 3.  World War Z, on the other hand, I don’t have a good feeling about.  My friend pointed out that casting a big star such as Brad Pitt could lessen the gritty realism of the book and I don’t disagree.  But also, what is a film version of that movie going to bring to the table that we haven’t already seen?

What are you looking forward to seeing in the next year?

True Blood at Comic Con plus Season 3 Episode 6

Monday, July 26th, 2010

Unfortunately, I did not make it to Comic Con this year.  After reading about all the True Blood goings-on there, I’m pretty sad I missed it.  The panel on Friday included Alan Ball and most of the cast.  Notable absentees included Eric and Jason, but Eric was represented by a cardboard cut-out.  The panel started with a preview of the rest of the season.  You can see it here.  (I made the conscious decision not to watch it because I like being surprised every week.)

Highlights from the panel:

  • “I do believe that Bill and Sookie are soulmates,” said Alan Ball.  ”I think that Bill and Sookie of the show have become slightly different from the Bill and Sookie of the books. [And] I personally root for things to work out between them.  I don’t know if they will, but I believe the love is true between them.”
  • Stephen Moyer talked about how they filmed the “twisted” sex scene.  A full cast of Lorena’s body was made and strapped to Bill.  The neck was articulated so it ratcheted.  Moyer said it was fantastic to film.
  • James Frain discussed [my beloved] Franklin by saying, “I don’t think we’re going to delve into why he’s a psychopath, but we’re going to luxuriate in the nature of his psychopathology.”
  • Kristin Bauer Van Straten, Pam, didn’t say much, but had some of the best zingers of the night. When asked about working with wild animals, Kristin interjected and said: “Oh, Skarsgård isn’t so bad once you get used to him.” AWESOME.
  • Joe Manganiello, Alcide, explained The Brotherhood of the Sock. There are three different types of socks on set to cover your junk during nude scenes.  These include a thong, the man-panty (Manty!) and a sock with a draw-string.
  • Alcide, has been confirmed as a series regular for this season and season 4.
  • “I would love to see the show run as long as it possibly can. I don’t want to have to get to the point where we have to explain why vampires are aging,” Ball said. He says he’s enjoying this job more than any job in his entire life.

Not only was there a panel, but there was a Merlotte’s.  Comic Con’s Wired Cafe constructed a replica Merlotte’s.  At some point over the weekend, Sam, Jessica, Sookie and Bill stopped by.  Sam stayed the longest, taking his place behind the bar to get his drink on.

A new episode of True Blood aired last night: “I Got a Right to Sing the Blues.”  We’re at the point in the season where I’m running very low on patience and just want all of my questions answered and my lust for enemy blood satisfied.  Characters I wish to see dead: Lorena, King Russell, Cooter and Debbie, Joe Lee and the assholes trying to beat up on Lafayette.

As the episode opens, Sookie is dragged back to Russell’s house and Bill unwisely tries to save her by killing one of Russell’s vampires and attempting to kill Russell himself.  Russell, around 3,000 years old, shakes him off like a fly and then orders Lorena to kill him.  Sookie begs for his life, but her pleas fall on deaf ears.

After briefly being questioned by Russell, (the questioning scene was such a waste, Sookie doesn’t know what she is capable of and she wasted her questions to Russell by asking if he was king of all the vampires – no, and if Lorena would really kill Bill – yes… How about what’s the deal with the werewolves? or what are you going to do with me?)  Sookie is trapped alone in Bill’s former room.  Luckily Tara is still Franklin’s prisoner in the same house and she decides to escape with Sookie.  After a bizarre almost-sex scene where Tara bites a skin-flap off of Franklin’s shoulder and tugs at it like a dog, she’s able to slip out of bed while he’s sleeping.  She grabs a handy mace off the wall and bludgeons the hell out of Franklin’s head.  Meanwhile Lorena is torturing Bill in the slave quarters.  She lets Cooter and Debbie drink his blood and they run off too high to notice Sookie sneaking around in a misguided attempt to save Bill.  Lorena finally gets to bite Sookie.  I wonder if she’ll fall in love with her now.

I know Bill can’t be dead (well dead dead, he’s already dead) and I’m pretty sure bashing in Franklin’s head won’t do much more than make him extra-homicidal, but it was still hard to watch Lorena and Tara torture their men.  I cringed when Franklin’s head flattened and bled.

Eric is pretending to be on Russell’s side until he figures out how to avenge the murder of his family more than a thousand years earlier.  Apparently part of his plan is pretending to be gay because he keeps flirting with Russell and Russell’s partner Talbot.  Jessica glamours a Merlotte’s customer into going to the bathroom so she can drink from her.  Things go well for Lafayette and Jesus until Jesus finds out Lafayette is a drug dealer.  Sam suspects Joe Lee is making his brother participate in dog fights.  I’m not sure what he can do to stop that.  Jason wants to be with Crystal, but she tells him it’s too dangerous.  When he shows up at her house she pretends not to know who he is.  Then he goes back to Merlotte’s and pretends to be a cop again while taking out his rage on the current QB.  After unifying against Maryann last season it seems that everyone is now completely splintered and no one knows who to trust again.

What did you think of last night’s episode?  Did you make it to Comic Con and see any of the True Blood events?

Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark Poster

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Oh poster, you had me at hello.  I don’t know too much about this upcoming live-action film “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark,” but I do know I want to see it based on the poster alone.  Produced and co-written by Guillermo Del Toro, the film chronicles the misadventures of Sally, a little girl who faces a host of loathsome creatures in her house.  Her father doubts her tall-tales even after his girlfriend agrees that something menacing is afoot.

The film is a remake of a 1973 made-for-tv film with the same title.  Aside from the gorgeous poster, Guillermo Del Toro’s presence as producer is enough to  make me want to see the film after his previous involvement in Pan’s Labyrinth and The Orphanage.  The film is set for January 21, 2011 release.  As far as I can tell there isn’t a trailer out yet.

Do you think I’m being too hasty judging a book by its cover?  Or are you excited for this film too?
