Blood Jewelry on Etsy
Monday, August 23rd, 2010Human Bone Jewelry from the Churchyard
Monday, August 2nd, 2010Churchyard is an independent jewelry line that offers eight designs made from real human bones.

The human bone cross is set with a garnet symbolizing the Blood of Christ. This item is only offered occasionally, and as with the regular human bone cross, no two are exactly alike. $115, or $80 without the garnet.
The jewelry maker, Columbine Phoenix, told Funeral Wise blog that the jewelry she makes out of human bones is her favorite.
“This is something solid that you can hold in your hand or wear in your ear,” she said. “It makes death a little less scary.”
The bones come from an education supply store that dismantles retired science classroom skeletons. Bones are expensive. A hand costs about $250 and a whole skeleton can be $5000.
“You can tell that they were from a good family,” said Phoenix, referring to the skeletons. “They got their milk and they’re strong.”

Six carpal (wrist) bones, alternating with garnets, traditionally associated with good health, on sterling links for $95
Crafting bone jewelry is actually quite difficult. “The strength of bone is all on the outside,” she explained. “The inside is honeycombed and light, or else it would be too heavy to walk.”
Hand bones are the best to work with, others being too clunky. When Phoenix pierces a bone with a pin she smothers the hole with glue to lessen the risk of a fracture.
What do you think of wearing a necklace with a mysterious human bone on it? It reminds me of a serial killer trophy, Catholic relics and Tribal war trophies. It definitely makes a statement.
Violet Darkling Jewelry
Tuesday, July 6th, 2010
New Zealand jewelry line Violet Darkling launched in the spring of 2010. Designed by Louisa Richwhite, the line seeks to capture a dark fairy-tale aesthetic that celebrates the fears and wonder of childhood. I appreciate the simplicity of the designs as well as their polish. I love the girly skull ring pictured above with its wide-eyed innocence.

Los Angeles jewelry designer Gasoline Glamour makes rock and roll jewelry that’s best described as “sleazy chic.” Their pieces feature all the things I love: Swarovski crystals, skulls, spikes and chains. A little gritty, very edgy, I want one of each.

Small Cat Skull cast from an anatomy drawing of a bobcat (no bobcats were harmed) in sterling silver for $84

Delfina Delettrez’s Jewelry
Wednesday, May 12th, 2010Italian jewelry designer Delfina Delettrez Fendi is an heir to the Fendi fashion house. A lot of her current collection is gothic inspired and features trendy motifs like vampire fangs and skulls.
The jewelry is cool. But most of it is so costumey that the high cost seems to price the product out of reach of the type of people who would want it.
Danielle Nicole Hills
Wednesday, April 28th, 2010Danielle Nicole Hills is a metalsmith working out of Brooklyn who combines metal and organic materials in her art pieces to achieve a primal, untamed feel. Inspired by the characters of a hunter, a surgeon and an executioner, Danielle’s collection, “Gilding Primal Instinct,” has an antique quality, though she seems to reference several periods. The sense of history and character in each piece elevates her work to inspirational. I immediately start to form stories about the wearers even when I look at the piece on a plain white display.

In Chains: While reminiscent of the ghost of Jacob Marley from A Christmas Carol, I love the idea of being draped in rough, chunky chains.

The Executioner: Model Ashley Fontones wears the Executioner's Mask, In Chains and holds the Bladed Comb
I can’t wait to see future collections! To see more of Danielle’s work visit her website or her Etsy shop.
