Pullip Dolls by Jun Planning

Monday, August 31st, 2009
adsiltia

Adsiltia is one of my prized possessions. She is a collaboration between Japanese designer H. Naoto and Pullip. You really have to see her in person to appreciate how stunning she is. She's $128.

Time to introduce another one of my obsessions: Pullip Dolls.

Pullip dolls are produced by Korean company Chunsang Chunha and marketed by JUN Planning of Japan.  A new Pullip is released every month and the best prices can usually be had when you preorder the dolls in the months before their release.  The only licensed US retailers are The Valley of the Dolls (website) and Pullip Style (website).  Sometimes you can find the dolls on Ebay.

While the dolls come in a variety of styles, it should be no surprise that I prefer the drearier maidens.

One of the coolest things about Pullip dolls are the customization possibilities they allow.  Their eye color can be changed with custom eye chips.  Their hair color or style can be changed with wigs.  They can be given piercings and new outfits.  Artist Brigitte Coovert has taken the customization possibilities to a whole new level with her one-of-a-kind Zombukis.

The Valley of the Dolls is currently offering a limited selection of rare, often hard-to-find early Pullips. Because they’re sought-after collection pieces, they’re expensive.  But if you’ve been looking for one of these, this may be your best chance to snap her up.

Chicago’s Club Neo

Monday, August 31st, 2009

NeoSignNightSPLast Saturday night my friend introduced me to Neo.  Billed as a goth/punk club, the dark  room looks like it was carved out of stone.  Colored, moving lights that sweep the dance floor and periodic blasts of fog give the room an otherworldly-feel.  The DJ played techno and industrial music and the dance floor, while full, did not feel overcrowded.

Please understand that this was my first and only (so far) experience with the club so I’m loathe to make generalizations from my limited contact.  My friend and I got there at eleven, which it turned out was too early.  This is more of an after-hours club and though it wasn’t empty at midnight,  it didn’t really fill in until around one.  Drink prices were very reasonable: $6 for each of the shots and cocktails I ordered, and the drinks were well-mixed.

I’m curious if my favorite thing about Neo is something club regulars take for granted.  The whole vibe of the place is nonchalant, do your own thing, treat others as you’d like to be treated.  Let me explain by contrasting some typical Los Angeles club-going issues.  Goth Club Bar Sinister, for example, doubles the cover charge from $10 to $20 if you show up not dressed almost completely in black.  At Neo guys in old NIN t-shirts and jeans were dancing next to women in short dresses and heels next to a mohawked, safety-pinned punk next to a pretty girl in a black jumper and fringe boots and nobody was bothering or glaring at anybody else.  It seems you can wear whatever you want and be comfortable here.

Another common problem I’ve had in LA clubs is unsolicited grinding and groping.  Guys will suddenly materialize behind me and push into me without so much as a word.  Not only did this not happen to me at Neo, but I didn’t see it happen to anyone else either.  Everybody on the dance floor is there because they want to dance.  Talented dancers and complete spazzes dance alongside each other and it’s attitude free.  I didn’t even see any smashed out of their mind dancers.  I think most people on the dance floor were sober to somewhat buzzed.  And the people-watching when you’re sitting a dance out around the perimeter is pretty incredible because some people are just so into the music.  I can’t express how lovely it is to be at a dance club surrounded by people who are dancing for fun.

There were a few things that I didn’t like about Neo.  There’s a disco ball above the dance floor.  Maybe it’s supposed to be ironic, but it kind of mars the dungeony feel of the rest of the decor.  Also, for a goth/punk club, it just seemed kind of cheery.  A lot of the music was upbeat techno and I guess I like my goth nights with a little edgier metal feel.  Neo has been serving the Chicago underground scene for thirty years, however,  so far be it for me to tell them to make any changes.

neo

Reviews on Metromix, Yelp and Myspace suggest that Thursday nights are the most happening.  I guess New Wave music is featured that night though, so it might not suit the more gothic tastes.  If I get a chance before I leave I’ll try to check out a Thursday night.

Neo is located at 2350 N Clark St. in Lincoln Park.  The entrance is at the end of a pothole-ridden alley.  Hours are 10pm-4am Sundays and Wednesday-Friday and 10pm-5am on Saturdays.  There’s a $5 cover charge some nights (including the Saturday night when I was there).  It’s a twenty-one and over club.  The bar only accepts cash.  For more information about upcoming events visit their website here.

Fall Fashion

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Chicago has a damp chill in the air that can only mean that Fall is invading.  It’s a good season to be dreary.  Some years it’s hard to find darker clothes outside of goth and biker shops.  This year dark clothes are de rigeur.  With black, purple and metallics hot colors this fall and tights, leggings and gloves hot accessories, there are tons of mainstream fashion offerings suitable for a stylish, but dreary young lady.

Custom Zombie’s Custom Cabinet of Curiosities Part 2

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Rikki Little of Custom Zombie Etsy shop has collected some new pieces for her Cabinet of Curiosities.

Cabinet-8.09

So far she’s storing everything on the above pictured countertop, but she’s definitely running out of room for new finds.

Cabinet3-8.09

I asked Rikki about the skull pictured above and she replied, “Yes, it is a real deer skull.  My family lives out in the country and one of their dogs dragged it into the front yard.  My brother-in-law had been chasing the kids around with it but I thought my cabinet was a better use!”

Cabinet2-8.09

The Orb Weaver Spider in the shadow box behind the deer skull was a gift.  It’s one of Rikki’s favorite pieces in the collection so far.

Cabinet4-8.09

Cabinet5-8.09

Rikki has been very resourceful.  She posted on Freecycle that she was looking for decorative birdcages, and got a response from someone who had two to donate to the project.

Cabinet10-8.09

Rikki’s collection is still not complete.  I asked her if there’s anything else she’s looking for and she wrote back, “Oh, there’s a LOT that I’m still looking for.  The list is huge!”

Special Effects Contact Lenses

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

Special effects contact lenses come in an almost infinite number of styles and colors. You do not need a corrective vision prescription to wear these lenses, but you do need a contact lens exam from a professional to get your base curve and diameter.  Otherwise the lenses will not fit properly.  Plus a professional still needs to do a proper fitting once the lenses are ready.

Special effect lenses should be cared for the same way regular contact lenses are cared for.  You should not sleep with them in and you need to clean them with the proper solutions.

One of the most popular suppliers of special effects contact lenses is WildEyes manufactured by CIBA.

Glow-Night contact lenses are designed for raves because they actually glow under a blacklight 1-save-on-lens.com has the best price at $20.95 per lens

A new trend among Cosplayers is to use contacts to give the illusion of wider-anime character-like eyes.  Korean companies Geo and Dueba make these lenses which are tinted into the outer-ring of the eye to give you the appearance of wide eyes.  They cost around $30-$50 per pair.  Learn more about Geo lenses here and Dueba lenses here.

Dark Fairy by tattereddreams on deviantArt

Dark Fairy by tattereddreams on deviantArt

When I hear the word fairy I immediately picture a delicate, miniature creature fluttering around with colorful butterfly wings.  Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of fantasy art depicting dark, sometimes angry looking fairies and I was curious to know if this was a new interpretation or if it came from folklore.  So I did a little research and was surprised to learn that fairies have long been suspected of mischief-making.  From tangling the hair of sleepers to leading travelers astray or causing tuberculosis, there is a long tradition of malicious fairy behavior.  Fairies also often kidnap people and leave changelings in their place.  In 1895 an Irish man burned his wife to death because he thought that she had been replaced by a changeling.

Protective measures from fairies include wearing clothing inside out, running water, ringing bells, or carrying bread.  The rest of this post is a roundup of some dark fairies and a couple of artists who create them.

Imagekind Blog posted a fascinating interview with Jasmine on August 19, 2009.  When asked “Who is your inspiration? What keeps you making art?” Jasmine replied, “My paintings are very much how I express myself, I am not a very social person but I have a very rich inner world, and I share that part of me by painting my ideas and showing them to the rest of the planet. Almost all of my paintings are self-portraits in a way – the characters I paint are caricatures of myself in fantasy environments that are pure escapism for me.”  Read the full interview here.

High Bidder Gives Up Crypt Above Marilyn Monroe

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

The Ebay auction offering bidders the chance to buy the crypt above Marilyn Monroe ended Monday at 4.6 million dollars after 21 bids from twelve bidders.

After the auction closed, the high bidder emailed Elsie’s Poncher’s representative, writing, “I am awfully sorry, but I need to cancel this because of the paying problem.”

The other bidders now have 24 hours to put in a new bid.
