Wednesday, March 31st, 2010The Walking Dead comes to AMC this fall
Tuesday, March 30th, 2010From the network that brought us Mad Men (not my cup of tea at all!) comes a series about humans struggling to survive against flesh-eating zombies in a post-apocalyptic world. AMC has ordered six episodes of “The Walking Dead,” a new series based on the comic with the same title.
AMC’s senior VP of programing, Joel Stillerman, says he admires the comics for “brilliantly capturing the social commentary and ongoing human drama of the zombie apocalypse. And it lets us kick a little zombie you-know-what from time to time.”
The comic creator, Robert Kirkman, is an executive producer. Casting is still ongoing, but “The Ghost Writer” co-star Jon Bernthal has been signed on to play main character Rick Grime’s former partner Shane.
Expect to see the show in October when AMC traditionally holds a “Fright Fest” period of programming. This could be a lot of fun.
Sadotna’s Clothes
Tuesday, March 30th, 2010I saw one of Melbourne, Australia label Sadotna’s dresses on Notcouture this morning and I was immediately interested in seeing more. It only took seconds to click over to their website and fall in love. Designed by Bronwyn Nicholson, the label specializes in tailored, dark clothes for the modern bohemian. Sadotna has taken Victorian and nineteenth century dandy influences and updated them to get a look that is edgy and sometimes androgynous.
Sadotna only has a store in Australia right now, but you can email sales@sadotna.com for more information. To see more of Sadotna’s looks visit their website.
Artist John Schwegel
Monday, March 29th, 2010I am having a terribly grumpy morning. It’s nothing you did, lovely readers, but I got up on the wrong side of the bed and I pretty much want to stab everyone in the face today. For awhile I didn’t even think I’d get a post up I was feeling so sour. Then I found John Schwegel’s spooky cute creations on Flickr and my whole mood turned around. I’m so excited to show you his awesome freaky little characters.
John specializes in digital vector illustrations created on Adobe Illustrator. His work is humorous and slightly sick which obviously puts it right up my own twisted alley.
He also has T-shirts available at RedBubble.
To see more of John’s work visit his website or his Deviant Art gallery.
Second World Premiere Illustration
Friday, March 26th, 2010In early January I posted about the artwork of Aleksandra Marchocka. I fell head over heels for her sexy and powerful characters. I was so excited when she agreed to do a portrait of me to accompany the ones created by Jamie Brown and Kukubee. The results are even better than I expected.
Aleksandra’s illustration is incredible! I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! She put so much thought into the details from the fierce boots to the hand puppets. Nobody will mess with this Dahlia.
Thank you so much Aleksandra for doing a brilliant job! To see more of Aleksandra’s work visit her website or her Deviant Art Gallery.
The Museum of the Funeral Service Institute of Vienna
Thursday, March 25th, 2010I know what I’m doing next time I make it to Vienna. Gadling has a fascinating post about the museum attached to the Funeral Service Institute of Vienna.

This sitting-up coffin was created for a European Funeral Fair, but it's not practical since the grave dug for it would have to be deeper than six feet.
Diamonds can be made synthetically using carbon, heat and pressure, so it’s possible to create diamonds from the ashes of human remains. These diamonds are often blue due to the chemicals in the body. The Funeral Service Institute of Vienna will turn your loved-ones ashes into a quarter carat diamond for €4,680 (full carats cost €14,440). The process takes about eight months. This seems like a better way to treasure your loved ones’ remains than sitting them up on the mantle. But I like sparklies.
The post on Gadling also discusses Viennese mourning fashion, funeral toys that taught children how to behave at funerals and some additional customs.
The museum is open to the public by appointment. Tours cost €4.50 (personal) and €2.50 (larger groups). To make an appointment call 501-95-4227 (country code 43) or ask your concierge. The first Saturday of October, the museum stays open late, and you can lie down in a coffin. 1500 people climbed into the coffins last year.
Custom My Little Ponies
Wednesday, March 24th, 2010I vaguely remember having a few My Little Ponies when I was young, but if they had been as cool as these one of a kind customized ones I definitely would have hung on to them. After stumbling upon the corseted pony above on Deviant Art I discovered several talented pony artists. These ponies are collectable display pieces. If you want one you have to stalk Ebay or convince one of the artists to take a commission. Expect to pay over a hundred dollars as the process involves re-rooting hair, painting and sculpting.
Of the custom ponies I found, the ones by Texas artist Woosie are my favorite because they’re so detailed and creepy cute.
See more of Woosie’s work in her Deviant Art gallery.
There are tons of custom ponies on Deviant Art: ponies based on characters from movies, ponies made to look like other animals and ponies with tattoo-like graphics. I picked a few others I liked. You should be able to get to each artist’s page by clicking on the picture of the pony.
XIII Design, LLC
Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010The creative force behind XIII Design, LLC is San Francisco artist and graphic designer Tim Butler. His impressive body of work includes graphics for band t-shirts for Slayer, Slipknot, Cathedral, Metallica, Chimaira, HIM, Disturbed, Bullet for My Valentine, Lamb of God, DragonForce, the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, the Clash and more.
Butler’s twisted illustrations manage to be simultaneously fun and dark. Many of them have a tattoo-like feel. Grinning skulls mock the viewer.
Six of Butler’s designs are currently available on silkscreened American Apparel t-shirts.
To see or purchase available t-shirts or download free wallpapers featuring his designs, visit XIII-SF’s webshop. You can see more of Butler’s work on his website, Weird Art or his Myspace page.
T.S. Wittelsbach Jewelry
Monday, March 22nd, 2010Tomas Wittelsbach had a long and distinguished career as a sculptor of sets and props for the film industry before beginning a jewelry line. The same innovation and story-telling that would be an asset to film-making is present in his fantastic creations.
“My quest is the Reinvention of the Art of Jewelry at a level only accessible to the nobility of our collective past,” says Wittelsbach. The past is heavily referenced in his designs which take inspiration from mythology and history.
My favorite pieces in his collection are from the Calvaris series which depicts skulls. The handmade pieces are available in sterling silver, gold and platinum.

Claddagh is a reinvention of the popular icon of Irish heritage as both a friendship and wedding ring. The design consists of two clasped hands holding a crowned heart, symbolizing love, friendship and loyalty. starts at $250

This Sugar Skull ring is inspired by the 12th Century tradition of giving sugar bones to family and friends to celebrate the Day of the Dead. I love the toothy grin. starts at $350

Striga was an ancient Roman legendary creature described as a nocturnal bird of ill omen, like a vampire, hence the design. starts at $400

The Jaeger Pendant is a reinvention of the badge worn by the Black Forest Masters of the Hunt. I love this design for its symmetry. It's such a unique piece. starts at $250 ($2500 as shown)

Janus: the god of beginnings and endings in the Roman Pantheon, usually depicted with two faces looking in opposite directions. His most apparent remnants in modern culture are his namesakes, the month of January and the caretaker of doors and halls: Janitor. I have a January birthday so I think I need this. starts at $3500
To see more pieces in the Calvaris’ series or to view the rest of his collection, visit TS Wittelsbach’s website.
Attempted robber might be a vampire
Friday, March 19th, 2010
The NYPD is looking for this man, who looks a lot like Dracula, for allegedly biting a cabbie in the neck during an attempted robbery. This is a creepy picture.
Ok, probably not really, but during an attempted robbery in a New York City cab, a suspect bit the cabbie repeatedly on the neck, back and arm. The cab was traveling from East 130 Street and Lexington Avenue to a location near Bronx City Community College. As the cab reached the destination, the suspect took out a semi-automatic handgun and demanded the cab driver’s money. A struggle began and the suspect bit the driver multiple times before fleeing into the night without the money. The crime took place March 13 about 3 AM, an ideal hunting time for vampires. The suspect is described as being a 6 foot tall, Hispanic male in his 30s with a black leather jacket. The suspect is not yet in custody.
I couldn’t find any information about the condition of the cab driver. About 10-15% of all human bite wounds become infected. Some myths claim that vampire bites can turn a victim into a vampire.
